Mount Vernon Knights Win Their 11th State Championship

Fairport Falls to Mount Vernon in Class AA Boys Basketball Final

Binghamton, NY — Fairport Red Raiders in their first state title game appearance had their dreams dashed Sunday by the Mount Vernon Knights. Mount Vernon (23-4) put Fairport (23-2) in catch-up mode the rest of the way after it took a 5-4 lead at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

“Me, Noah and Eric, since ninth grade we’ve always pictured ourselves being on the gym wall in a picture and getting a ring,” 6-foot-8 senior, Greg Calixte told Lohud in March. “This is our last year to get it. It’s now or never.”
The three Mount Vernon High School Seniors, Greg Calixte, Noah Morgan and Eric Monroe have now achieved their slice of MVHS Basketball history.

Mt. Vernon ends the half with a good-looking reverse to take a 9-point lead over Fairport into the break.

Led by Jason Douglas-Stanley’s 16 points, the Knights capped off their championship season in impressive fashion, using their size and speed to capture their 11th Class AA title. Both Douglas-Stanley and Noah Morgan were named to the all-tournament team. John Richardson was also given the sportsmanship award.

Following their victory, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard W. Thomas gave props to coach Bob Cimmino and his squad for bringing home championship gold from Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. He said he “cannot wait to welcome them home for a ‘Parade of Champions’ to celebrate together as one big family.”

“Mount Vernon is back and all of New York State knows it,” Mayor Thomas proudly proclaimed. “Congratulations to our hard-working young men, Coach Bob Cimmino and his staff, each of whom have made the entire port city proud. The Knights exemplify the values our community holds dear – discipline, teamwork, trust, and the determination to never give up. Their victory is our victory as it inspires all of us to strive for glory. Moments like this plant seeds of aspiration in our youth, molds their character to be of courage and reinvigorates hope for the future. Today, our Knights are taking home their 11th state champion title – a historical record. We couldn’t be more thrilled and cannot wait to welcome them home for a “Parade of Champions” to celebrate together as one big family.”

Fairport puts some pressure on, but it leads to this on the other end for the Knights, who leads by 13 with 4:27 left in the game.

The Red Raiders, which had their opportunities following defensive stops, couldn’t get a basket when they needed it most, shooting 8-for-28 in the second half. Trailing by nine points at halftime, they cut Mt. Vernon’s lead to four in the third quarter but didn’t get any closer.

Mt. Vernon’s quick, disciplined guards for Mt. Vernon knocked down their shots and didn’t turn over the ball. Jason Douglas-Stanley and Demetre Roberts combined for 27 points, seven assists, and just one turnover, capturing their first New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship since winning back-to-back Class AA championships in 2011-12.

BW Congratulates the Mount Vernon Knights for bringing home its 11th state championship!

BOYCOTT FOR BLACK LIVES T-SHIRT  BUY HERE

Colin Kaepernick has committed no crime other than spoke truth to power about the injustices to black people in the United States. For this, he should not be punished by blackballing him from the game of football. If people want change, we must Boycott! It’s up to us to protest but not just physically; with our money. If black lives don't matter to them, then our black dollars shouldn't either.
