Vahalia, NY – While very little details are available at the time, fire has apparently broken out at the Westchester County Jail in Vahalia at about 6:00 PM. It appears the side of the penitentiary. Police said there was construction happening in the building where the fire started. There were no injuries or evacuations.
The County Jails has been plagued with a assortment of highly publicized issues recently like the multitude of assaults on officers by inmates, medical deaths like Rashad McNulty, the suicide death of Bassem Yousef at the jail in June, which was the second inmate suicide there this year, when Alex Fusco was found in his cell having used bedsheets to hang himself on February.
In August, a prisoner was accused of attacking two correction officers in the Westchester County jail. Rawkan McKinnon, a 20-year-old New Rochelle man that was being held on first-degree robbery charges, placed a correction officer in a headlock, the Westchester Department of Correction confirmed. Also in August, an inmate tried to escape from the Westchester County jail.
Let’s not forget the selfiegate scandal last October which led to a warden being suspended.
At approximately 7:50 PM it appears the fire has been extinguished and firefighters are packing up.
No further information is available about the fire but Stay Tuned to Black Westchester for more on this breaking story.
