Mount Vernon – Steven ‘Butch’ Thomas, older brother of Mount Vernon Mayor Richard W. Thomas, who is running for City Council on the Republican ticket, assaulted Councilman André Wallace a little after 9:00 PM, outside Maggie Spillane’s Ale House located at 571 Gramatan Ave.
Councilman Wallace who had just left Democratic Headquarters, stopped in Maggie Spillane to get a bite to eat when he ran into the City Council hopeful who ran an unsuccessful write-in campaign during the Democratic Primary. The two exchanged words inside and Wallace walked outside and Butch Thomas followed.
On the Broad Street side of the building the two exchanged words again when Councilman Wallace states Thomas pushed him, he pushed Butch off of him when he was charged by the Mayor’s detail who was standing and watching with the mayor. As Councilman turned to the rushing police officer, Butch Thomas sucker punched Councilman Wallace, hitting him on the side of his head according to witnesses, who say the two were quickly separated and Councilman Wallace was grabbed and pushed against the wall to prevent him from defending himself.
The officer described only as a Hispanic officer who works on the mayor’s detail quickly threw Councilman Wallace against the wall when Wallace states Butch attempted to unsuccessfully swing on him again. The officer told Councilman Wallace he was going to arrest him if he didn’t calm down.
“I told the officer I want him arrested for assault and the officer replied ‘aint nobody getting arrested tonight,'” Councilman Wallace tells Black Westchester.
Butch Thomas yelled out that, Councilman Wallace who has been one of the mayor’s strongest adversaries called him the “N” word and spit on him. Several witnesses tell BW no one spit on anyone. One witness who didn’t want to be named said Councilman Wallace was bleeding out of his ear.
Wallace eventually went to the Mount Vernon Police Department to report the incident since the mayor’s detail refused to arrest Butch. Then Wallace went to Mount Vernon Hospital to have his ear checked out and was released about 4:30 AM after having x-rays and several tests done.
Little more is known at this time but a city official tells BW that Butch Thomas was not arrested despite being seen by witnesses coming out of the MVPD, where Butch’s former employer and the mayor’s adviser, Joseph Spiezio III is the Deputy Police Commissioner.
City Council President Roberta Apuzzo tells BW that she has called the New York State Police requesting an independent investigation into the allegations of the assault by Butch Thomas on Councilman André Wallace.
Whether or not this incident will damage Thomas quest for City Council, remains to be seen.
“With the tumultuous atmosphere in City Hall, the previous 20 months is this the caliber of character we want to elect to govern us,” ask one Fleetwood resident who witnessed the incident as he was walking home.
We were unable to reach Butch Thomas but look forward to speaking with him on the incident in the near future. Stay tuned to BW for more on this developing story.
